Abused Puppy Returned to Owner

A four-month-old Doberman bitch, which was found buried alive underneath a heavy load of stones in a lava field in southwest Iceland on Saturday, is recovering rapidly and was returned to the owner yesterday. Police have cleared him off all suspicion.

“The owner of the puppy is not suspected of the crime,” Eyjólfur Kristjánsson, officer at the Sudurnes police and customs department, told Morgunbladid, explaining that the owner had given a believable statement on the disappearance of the dog and that his papers and licenses had been in order.

People are outraged about the treatment of the puppy and some bloggers blamed the owner, posting defamatory remarks about him on their weblogs before he had even been questioned.

According to Kristjánsson, no one is suspected of the crime at the time being, but police are doing everything in their power to find the perpetrator.

Helgi Sigurdsson, a veterinarian at the Animal Hospital in Vídidalur in Reykjavík who has cared for the puppy since it was found on Saturday, said the dog is recovering quickly. The Doberman can now stand on all four legs, feeds well and is generally frisky.
