Above Average Temperature in Reykjavík

The average temperature in Reykjavík in January was 2.4°C (36.3°F), 2.9°C (37.2°F) above average for the month of January during the period 1961-1990 and 1.4°C (34.52°F) above the average temperature from 2004-2013.

For the first time since meteorological data was first recorded in Iceland, there was no frost in the rural area of Vatarnes, the East Fjords, in January, according to the latest report from the Icelandic Met Office. Vatarnes was the only place in Iceland where the temperature did not drop below 0°C (32°F). The lowest temperature in there was 0.4°C (32.72°F).

The highest average temperature in Iceland in January was at Kvísker, near Jökulsárlón, Southeast Iceland: 3.3°C (37.94°F). The highest overall temperature was 8.4°C (47.12°F) at Sauðanesvita near Siglufjörður, North Iceland.

The coldest inhabited place was Svartárkot in Bárðardalur valley, North Iceland, with an average temperature of -1.5°C (29.3°F) in January. The coldest day was -19°C (-2.2°F) at Brúarjökull glacier on January 12.
