A famous house has been offered on the Reykjavík real estate market, Fjölnisvegur 11, a villa in the center of Reykjavík that has been owned by a number of wealthy individuals, most recently Hannes Smárason, the former CEO of Icelandair and FL Group. Smárason, who is now residing in London, was among the best known Icelandic businessmen in the events leading up to the crash in 2008. He was selected Businessman of the Year 2006 by Fréttabladid (owned at the time by Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson and Smárason. The paper selected Jóhannesson as businessman of the year 2007).
Fjölnisvegur 11
The house belonged to a now bankrupt company owned by Smárason. The company had owned two houses side by side, Fjölnisvegur 9 and Fjölnisvegur 11. Smárason had planned to dig a tunnel between the two houses, but had not gotten to it when bankruptcy was imminent and Smárason’s wife bought house number 9 from the company.
According to Morgunbladid the company had also owned an apartment in London, now on sale for more than a billion ISK (9 million USD, 6 million €, 5.5 million GBP). So far there are no bidders.
