An experienced fox hunter, Reynir Bergsveinsson, has seen footprints by an unusually large fox in Þingvellir. He thinks this may be either a red fox or a silver fox.
“The Icelandic fox jumps when it runs, but this one walks. These footprints are much larger than by an Icelandic fox”, Reynir told mbl.is. “Of all the foxes I have shot in 60 years only three were so large that I could say they were like newborn calves, 5 to 8 kilograms (11 to 18 pounds). I recognize the fox by the way he walks. This one walks in a straight line and the distance between his footsteps is equal. He does not jump.”
Reynir suspects that someone may have smuggled a red fox to Iceland and released the animal. In 2012 a live fox was smuggled to Iceland by the ferry Norræna, and the animal made it all the way from Seyðisfjörður in the east to the Reykjavík area.
