A Man in Debt Stabbed Attorney, Wounded Soccer Star

knifeOn Monday morning a man came into an attorney’s office in Reykjavík and demanded to talk to someone regarding a debt the office had been collecting. The man seemed calm, but when an attorney in his early sixties sat down with him the man drew up a hunting knife and stabbed the lawyer repeatedly. Soon one of the solicitor’s colleagues, Gudni Bergsson, a former soccer star in England, came in and got the knife from the man. In the process Gudni got two wounds on his legs.

According to RÚV the attacker, a man born 1977, came to the office with the intent of “hurting somebody”. He was not thought to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A number of well-known lawyers work at the law firm, in addition to Gudni Bergsson. Others include former Chairman of the Solicitor’s Association of Iceland, Brynjar Nielsson, and Sigurmar Albertsson, husband of former Minister of Health, Álfheidur Ingadóttir, an MP for the ruling Left Green party.

The victim is still intensive care in the hospital and is kept asleep after multiple operations. Gudni Bergsson had to go to the Emergency Room, but was seen limping out in the afternoon.

The assailant had not paid a “minor debt” because of a motorcycle he bought a few years back. Landsbanki had tried to confiscate the cycle without success, and had charged the man with theft of the bike. He is still held in custody og police, but has not been charged yet for the attack.
