Following the launch of the Strætó bus line’s pilot program allowing pets to ride with their owners, an Icelandic horse named Stormsker became the first of its kind to have the honor of taking the bus, mbl.is reports.
Lest travelers begin to fear that they’ll have to share their morning commute with equine passengers on the reg, however, it should be noted that this was a publicity stunt—a joke staged, with special permission, as part of Stræto’s annual anniversary celebration. Per the new rules, it’s only smaller pets that are allowed to ride the bus now: cats, dogs, rodents, birds, rabbits, frogs, fish, reptiles, and insects. Pets must be escorted by an owner 18 years or older and owners may only take one pet with them at a time.
“I just got on the bus with him, and he thought it was marvelous,” said Jónína Sif Eyþórsdóttir, the handler who helped with the prank. “He’s really excited to get to travel by bus more often—it went extremely well.” She doubts, however, that Stormsker will have the opportunity to indulge in his new-found love of public transportation. “I doubt Icelanders are ready for that, but could work fine. Isn’t there always enough space in the back of the bus?”
