A Little Bit of Africa in Icelandic Elementary School

Super Mama Djombo, a band from Guinea-Bissau in West Africa visited Hraunavallaskóli elementary school in Hafnarfjördur, outside Reykjavík, yesterday and performed for the students.

Almost 500 students, and the oldest members of the adjacent Hraunavallaskóli kindergarten, listened to the band play and sang along to African tunes and danced to the beat of African drums, Morgunbladid reports.

The members of Super Mama Djombo taught the children songs from their home country, including a song which is popular among children in Guinea-Bissau.

According to assistant principal Gudrún Sturlaugsdóttir the atmosphere was great and she gave the concert a good review. “It was just wonderful,” Sturlaugsdóttir said.
