Guðmundur Ármannsson, a dairy farmer from East Iceland, was forced to visit a doctor in Reykjavík last week after getting hit in the eye with a cow’s tail, RÚV reports. His trip made the news because it was the first time in his life he visited Iceland’s capital, where more than two-thirds of Icelanders live. He wasn’t impressed by the city life, claiming that there were too many cars on the streets.
Guðmundur spent just one day in the city, getting a flight back home the same day he arrived, after visiting his brother-in-law. His wife, Gréta Ósk Sigurðardóttir, wasn’t too pleased with the trip, informing Rúv “He had to go and I sent away an innocent boy. When he returned, it was like a new man had stepped off the plane. He reminded me of a movie star, worldly and tough, even a bit too sure of himself. Now he’s just about insufferable. I beg you, don’t make too big a deal out of [the trip], he’s getting bigheaded.”
Guðmundur himself is surprised by the attention he’s getting. “People think it’s frightfully special that I went to Reykjavík” Guðmundur noted, “but nobody pays attention to the people that spend all their time in the city, never visiting the countryside. Even going abroad but never travelling in their own country. People don’t find that remarkable.”
