In June 2009, 95 companies filed for bankruptcy compared to 92 companies in June 2008, according to The Statistical Bureau, mbl.is reports. This amounts to slightly more than a three percent increase between years.

Divided into categories, the highest number of bankruptcies, 23, was in the field of construction and 20 in wholesale and retail.
In the first six months of 2009, the number of filed bankruptcies was 508 but in the first six months of the year 2008, 393 companies defaulted, which equals just over a 29% increase between years.
