6,000 new apartments in Reykjavik

6,000 new apartments could be built in Reykjavík over the next five years according to plans from the city’s zoning committee reports the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV. Most of the apartments will be built in areas that the city is working to make more densely inhabited. 700 apartments will be built in the area west of the planned Music Hall where currently there are drydocks. Planning for new apartments is also underway near Laugarvegur, bus terminal Hlemmur, and the new “Shadow” neighborhood (Skuggahverfi) to the north of Laugavegur.

The zoning committee will reorganize the industrial zone near Ellidaárvogur in order to expand the Marina neighborhood (Bryggjuhverfi) to accommodate up to 2,000 additional apartments. In Úlfarsárdalur, south of Mosfellssveit, lots for 1,000 new apartments will be put on auction in the beginning of the year.
