600 Attend Vestnorden Travel Mart

Over 600 participants are attending the Vestnorden Travel Mart in Akureyri which started today in Akureyri, the hub of of North Iceland. Vestnorden is an annual event held by tourism authorities in Iceland, Faroes and Greenland.

People in the tourism industry are positive and optimistic inspite of the difficult economic situation and the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull.

Bergthór Erlingsson, CEO of the the North Country’s marketing department said to Rúv that Vestnorden was extremely important to the industry in Iceland. He said that getting buyers to come to Iceland resulted in increased sales every time. Visitors travel from all over the world to attend the travel mart.

Erlingsson said that the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull last spring had really put Iceland on the map all over the world. The eruption had therefore not only been negative for the country’s image.

Vestnorden is held in Iceland bi-annually and in the Faroes and Greenland every other year.

Erlingsson said that tourist service operators had improved their showrooms greatly but over 550 tourist operators introduce their services at the mart.
