Reykjavík District Court sentenced Scott Ramsey, a British national living in Iceland, to 18 months in jail for an assault that led to the death of Flemming Tolstrup, a Danish soldier, reports the Icelandic National Broadcast Service.
Ramsey was charged with hitting the man without warning at a restaurant in Keflavík last fall. The blow landed on the man’s neck and caused bleeding that led to Mr. Tolstrup’s death.
The verdict says that Ramsey pleaded guilty, he had no prior record, led a moderate lifestyle and was employed. He did not intend to kill Mr. Tolstrup. The consequences of the blow were much more serious than was foreseeable. Ramsey said he hit the Danish soldier because the soldier was bothering his girlfriend.
The judge decided that an 18 months was appropriate punishment and postponed 15 months of the sentence. The judge also sentenced Mr. Ramsey to pay the parents of the deceased ISK 2 million in damages.
