170 Brazilians of Icelandic Origin Attend Gala Dinner

By Iceland Review

One hundred and seventy people, most of Icelandic origin, gathered for a gala dinner in Curitiba, South Brazil, last Saturday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first settlement of Icelanders in the country. At the event, many of the attendees met, for the first time, other people of Icelandic origin.

The gala dinner was held at a large restaurant on the outskirts of the city of Curitiba. Organizers had originally expected roughly 80 guests.

“What really stands out for me is that I didn’t expect this high number of people,” one of the guests, Annelise Jóakimsson, told rúv.is.

The families Barðdal, Jóakimsson, Jónsson, Ísfeld, Reikdal, Sönndal and Þorkelsson organized the event. Upon arrival in Brazil, their ancestors took up these family names.

Brazilians of Icelandic origin reportedly have a great interest in their heritage. A trip to Iceland next year is already being planned.
