The Reykjavík District Court today handed a 16-year prison sentence to a 23-year-old man for the murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend in Hafnarfjörður in February.

The convicted man has been ordered to pay close to ISK 8 million (USD 62,550, EUR 50,800) in damages and legal costs, ruv.is reports.
The man reportedly confessed to the murder in court. The pair are believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time.
It is believed that the deceased woman was killed on February 3, but it wasn’t until two or three days later that the man came forward to police, ruv.is reports.
The convicted man reportedly stabbed his girlfriend 27 times, including in the lungs and throat.
A psychiatrist confirmed that the man has struggled with drug addiction.
