13-Year-Old “Sleepdriver”

A thirteen-year-old girl took a car in Húsafell two nights ago and drove it to the town of Keflavik, mbl.is reports. It appears that the girl was fast asleep when she took the car, a Toyota Land Cruiser-jeep. The girl has been known to sleepwalk.

A jeep, similar to the one the girl drove in her sleep.

According to the car’s owner, it appears that first, the girl sleepwalked a long way, from a summer house in Húsafell, where she was staying, to a house where the car keys where kept. There, she wrote the owner a note saying “from the night prowler”, took the car keys and drove off.

The owner says that he has no reason not to believe the girl’s father when he says that she has been known to sleepwalk, especially since no valuables were stolen and no damage done to the home of the car owner.

“Probably we won’t be able to explain this because we don’t know the reasons for it. This happens in a state of deep sleep and truth be told, no particular reason has been identified,” says Júlíus K. Björnsson psychologist, asked why people sleepwalk.

“I cannot deny that if the case was that the poor girl woke up in another part of the country, after having driven all this way, it can’t be disputed that it happened. But I find it hard to believe. I have never heard about something like this before.

“You hear about people sleepwalking in their homes but then they usually wake up. In order to say something about it, the matter would have to be further investigated. This is highly unusual.”
