“Worst Half in 2-3 Years”

A qualifying game for the UEFA Euro 2016 in France between Iceland and Latvia at the Laugardalsvöllur arena in Reykjavík Saturday ended in a disappointing draw, 2:2 , RÚV reports . Lars Lagerbäck, the Icelandic men’s national football team coach, could not conceal his disappointment. He called the second half of the game the team’s worst in 2-3 years.

The draw shattered the team members’ hopes of finishing at the top of their group. This was their last home game in the qualifiers for the Euro 2016.

All began well with a goal from Kolbeinn Sigþórsson only five minutes into the game. Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson further raised the team’s hopes by scoring at the 27th minute, bringing the score to 2-0 for Iceland. But Latvians were ready for revenge in the second half, scoring a goal after only four minutes and adding a second one during the 67th minute. The final score was therefore 2:2 ―a result Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson called “embarrassing.”

The teams last met in Latvia a year ago when Iceland won 3:0.
