“Rite of Spring” in Reykjavík

The music festival “Vorblót – Rite of Spring” will be held for the second time in Reykjavík from May 17 to 19. One of Africa’s most respected musicians, Oumou Sangare from Mali, will perform at the festival.

Sangare has recorded a number of albums and performed alongside artists like Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti and Boukman Ekseryans, as stated in a press release issued this week by the event’s organizers.

She is known as “the songbird of Wassaoulou,” which is a type of music that originates in the traditional hunting music of West Africa. Her lyrics often contain references to love, independence and the liberation of women.

Other performers at “Rite of Spring” include Goran Bregovic and the Weddings and Funerals Band, the Scottish band Salsa Celtica and the Icelandic musicians Tómas R. Einarsson and Samúel J. Samúelsson and his big band.

The festival will take place at NASA at Austurvöllur in downtown Reykjavík. Tickets will go on sale shortly and are available on www.midi.is.
