The exhibition “New Acquisitions 2006-2010” opens at Reykjavík Art Museum – Kjarvalsstadir today.
“Dreamship” (around 1930) by Jóhannes S. Kjarval.
Donations and purchases of artwork have brought about the major part of the 711 works which have been added to the collection of the Reykjavík Art Museum in the past five years.
Part of the new acquisitions will be displayed at the exhibition, which is intended as a reminder of the importance of developing and preserving the museum’s collection.
The enormous collection that has come about in the past five years is divided into three categories: purchased works, 245, art donations, 495, and donations by inheritance, 35.
The works are by 94 different artists but Erró’s donation is the largest by far, counting 366 works in total. Other large donations include works by Brian Griffin and Mel Ramos.
Curated by Hafthór Yngvason.
The exhibition runs through January 23, 2011.
