The movie Sparrows (Þrestir), written and directed by Icelandic film director Rúnar Rúnarsson, has been chosen to compete in the main competition at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, according to a press release from the Icelandic Film Centre. The festival, one of the world’s most competitive, will take place in Donostia-San Sebastián in Spain September 18-26.
Sparrows is a drama about a 16-year-old boy, Ari, who has been living with his mother in Reykjavík, but is sent back to his childhood home in the West Fjords to live with his father, Gunnar, whom he hasn’t seen in six years. There, the boy must handle a difficult relationship with his father and his childhood friends. In these hopeless surroundings, Ari must find himself.
Sparrows is a story of coming of age. It’s about a ruined relationship between father and son, change and love. The film takes place in the summer in a deserted, decaying fishing town. At this time of year, there are 24 hours of daylight. The lighting in the film is magical and the setting is ideal for the theme of change.
Rúnar Rúnarsson and Mikkel Jersin produced the movie for Nimbus Film. Other producers are Lilja Ósk Snorradóttir for Pegasus and Igor Nola for Mp Film. Main roles are in the hands of Atli Óskar Fjalarsson, Ingvar E. Sigurdsson, Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir and Rade Serbedzija. Music is composed by Kjartan Sveinsson.
