‘Our Thoughts Are with the Victims’

“Our thoughts are with the victims, and with our friends the British,” stated Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, in reaction to an explosion in Manchester, England, last night, that claimed the lives of at least 22 people and injured 59. “This is, of course, terrible news, and absolutely tragic that anyone would use such an event to perpetrate this atrocious act.” he added.

The explosion occurred during the concert of American singer Ariana Grande, RÚV reports.

The Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs asks Icelanders in the area where the attack occurred to inform family members of their status. Both the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Iceland in London are monitoring developments. Guðlaugur Þór said there have been no reports of injuries among Icelanders who were attending the concert.

If assistance is needed, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs points to the Emergency Hotline of the Civil Service which can be reached at +354 545-9900.

Police say the explosion will be investigated as a terrorist attack.
