‘Morning Sun’ Approved as New Icelandic Name

Morgunsól (‘Morning Sun’) as a female name was approved by the Icelandic Naming Committee last week. The female names Sivía and Kala as well as the male name Sæbjartur were also approved, ruv.is reports.

The female name Elia however was rejected as it does not fit the rule that ‘a’ should not follow ‘i’ in Icelandic. There are also no cases of girls being named Elia in Iceland in the past, the committee reasoned.

The male middle name Hemmert was also rejected. Hemmert has been used as a first name in Iceland in the past but no living Icelander bears the name today.

It is permitted to give a child the same middle name as the first, middle or family name of its siblings, parents or grandparents. However, in this case no one in the family bore the name Hemmert and the committee therefore ruled against approving the use of the middle name.
