Reykjavík residents woke up to a white landscape this morning, following weeks of spring-like weather. The snow began early this morning and by 9 a.m. measured 9 cm deep in the city.
The weather conditions have caused delays at Keflavík International Airport, Vísir reports. Four Icelandair flights scheduled to land at the airport were diverted to Egilsstaðir, East Iceland due to the snowfall, while others circled above waiting for runways to be cleared.
Guðjón Helgason, Isavia Public Relations Officer says the delays have been caused by two factors. “On the one hand, due to heavy precipitation it proved difficult to ensure braking conditions for aircraft that were landing[…] At the same time it was difficult to deice aircraft that were departing,” Guðjón stated.
Travellers at Keflavík Airport can expect delays throughout the day. “Good reminder why it is called ICEland,” one traveller wrote on Instagram: “there goes my HK connection flight.”
In Reykjavík as well snow continues to fall, but is expected to stop in the afternoon.
