A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was registered on the Reykjanes peninsula, near Grindavík, this morning (residents in Reykjavík also felt the quake). The earthquake’s epicentre is believed to be roughly 5 km WSW of the Fagrdallsfjall mountain. According to RÚV, the earthquake was of such magnitude that the MET Office has asked off-duty employees to come in to provide additional assistance.
In an interview with Vísir, Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, with the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, confirmed that the earthquake had occurred but added that the exact magnitude of the quake could change following closer review.
Vísir also spoke to Njarðvík resident Karl Ottesen: “I was sitting on the sofa and everything kind of rippled.” Karl told reporter Kolbeinn Tumi Daðason that his daughter, who also lives in the area, had “never felt such a powerful tremor in the region.”
In late January, the authorities declared a state of uncertainty due to possible magma accumulation on the Reykjanes peninsula. December saw a swarm of earthquakes.
