Winter Weather Warning This Weekend

Winter has definitely arrived in Iceland, particularly in the North and East. RÚV reports that Akureyri residents awoke to dropping temperatures and icy roads on Friday morning, and that there was a great deal of snow throughout the northern region on Friday evening. The Icelandic Met office expects that the weekend will bring more of the same and is advising that outdoor enthusiasts take appropriate precautions this weekend.

The Icelandic Road Authority began road-clearing efforts on Friday night after considerable snowfall in North Iceland, the Suðurnes peninsula in South Iceland, and throughout the Westfjords. Ice slicks and packed snow are still concerns throughout these regions, both at high elevations and in low-lying regions.

The Icelandic Met office advises anyone planning to spend time outdoors over the weekend to keep a close eye on weather conditions. It’s expected that the weather could quickly change for the worst in East Iceland in the later part of the day on Saturday. Southeast Iceland is expected to experience considerable wind and rainy weather or sleet on Saturday. More snow is expected in the west on Saturday and will then move east on Sunday.
