Icelandic female rap collective Reykjavíkurdætur has won the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards in the category of hip hop/rap, RÚV reports. The Music Moves Europe Talent Awards are an annual European Union prize for popular and contemporary music, awarded to “emerging artists who represent the European sound of today and tomorrow.”
Reykjavíkurdætur are an all-female hip hop band formed in 2013 whose name translates to “daughters of Reykjavík” in English. The group currently has around 12 members, though the number fluctuates.
The awards will be presented in January at Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen in the Netherlands. The prize package consists of €5,000 (ISK 700,000/$5,700), tour and promotion support, several performances at Eurosonic Noorderslag Festival, free publicity, and a tailor-made training programme. Other winners of this year’s MMETAs include Bishop Briggs (UK) in the pop category and Albin Lee Meldau (Sweden) in the singer-songwriter category. Previous winners of the award include Adele, Damien Rice, and Mumford & Sons, as well as Icelandic artists Of Monsters and Men and Ásgeir Trausti.
