Foreign Minister: Iceland’s EU Application off the Table

Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson has announced that the Government of Iceland decided at its cabinet meeting last Tuesday that it did not intend to restart accession negotiations with the European Union. The Icelandic government therefore considers that Iceland is no longer a candidate country and requests the EU to act in accordance with this from now on, as stated in a ministry statement sent to the press this evening.

More Tourists Than Icelanders Fly Out of Iceland

Last February, more Britons than Icelanders checked in for flights from Keflavík International Airport. There were around 23,000 British passengers and 21,000 Icelandic ones. Until that point Icelanders had been the single biggest nationality using the airport every month of the year.

Neuer Altersrekord liegt bei 106 Jahren

Mit 105 Jahren und 346 Tagen ist Georg Breiðfjörð Ólafsson aus Stykkishólmur in Westisland seit vergangenem Samstag der „neue“ älteste Mann in Island. Zuvor war der Rekord von Helgi Símonarson aus dem Svarfaðardalur in Nordisland gehalten worden, der 105 Jahre und 345 Tage alt wurde. Georg feiert am 26. März seinen 106. Geburtstag.

Human Trafficking in the Spotlight

“The best prevention against human trafficking is to open the conversation and teach society about the issue. Then it is also important to support the immigrant community to make sure that individuals are not abused due to not properly knowing their rights. It is certainly a difficult task to prevent human trafficking, but there is much that can be done to work against human trafficking and other organized crime,” says Þorsteinn Gunnarsson, department head at the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration.
