New System to Reduce Prejudice towards Asylum Seekers

Changes that were made to the organization of services to asylum seekers last year were designed to reduce prejudice against them, Mayor of Reykjanesbær Kjartan Már Kjartansson stated. A recent survey concluded that residents of the municipality have a negative attitude towards the asylum seekers who are facilitated there.

Former FL Group CEO Acquitted in District Court

Former CEO and of investment company FL Group Hannes Smárason was this morning acquitted of charges of embezzlement from the company’s funds in Reykjavík District Court. The prosecution is to cover all costs, including ISK 10 million (USD 76,000, EUR 66,000) in defensive fees.

Icelandic Skier Happy with World Cup Results

One of Iceland’s top skiers, María Guðmundsdóttir, was pleased with placing 36th in slalom at the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creak in the U.S., February 2-15. She placed 52nd at World Cup two years ago. In the meantime, she injured her knee, missing the 2014 Olympics in Stotsji, Russia.

Search and Rescue Find Lost Tourist

Members of search and rescue Víkverji in Vík in South Iceland were called out on Monday evening after a foreign tourist didn’t board a bus he had booked a fare with. The man had intended to hike across Reynisfjall mountain and walk Reynisfjara beach earlier in the day.
