China’s new Ambassador to Iceland, Zhang Weidong, presented his letter of credence to President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson on Tuesday. His predecessor, Ma Jisheng, left the country suddenly at the beginning of the year.

Extrembelastung durch Schwefeldioxid

Eine sehr hohe Schwefeldioxidbelastung, die aus dem Vulkanausbruch in der Holuhraun herrührt, ist gestern am Mývatn und auch in Húsavík gemessen worden. Spitzenwerte in der Schule von Reykjahlíð waren auf fast 6000 Mikrogramm pro Kubikmeter Luft gemessen worden.

Snow Covers Eruption Area

The Holuhraun craters are 900 meters above sea level and even though plenty of heat is being pumped out the temperature in the area is well below zero on Celsius (32°F). The lava is surrounded by snow and that makes an often beautiful effect when the heat and the cold mix.
