Icelandic State’s 2012 Budget Bill Passed

althingi-voting-280910_pkThe government’s budget bill for 2012 was passed at Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, yesterday evening with 31 votes against three and 23 abstentions after almost three hours of voting. Six MPs were absent. All of the opposition’s proposals on amendments were rejected.

Landsbanki Pays First Part of Icesave Debt

icesave-logoThe bankruptcy estate of Landsbanki paid a more than ISK 350 billion (USD 2.9 billion, EUR 2.2 billion) deposit on the Icesave debt, which is the first large payment from the estate. It could take a few years to complete the repayment to the bank’s claimants.

Record Cold in Reykjavík in December

rvkpond-frozen_pkOnly once in the past 60 years has the start of December been colder in Iceland’s capital than this year, in 1961, according to meteorologist Trausti Jónsson. One may even have to go as far back as 1936 when the frost lasted throughout the month to find records of similarly cold temperatures.
