Burning of Njáll Repeated on 1000th Anniversary

fire_goOne thousand years have passed since the historical fire of the farm Bergthórshvoll in Landeyjar, south Iceland, took place, where Icelandic saga protagonist Njáll was burnt to death along with his wife Bergthóra, three sons and other residents, as described in Njáls saga. Next summer the fire will be staged during a special Burning of Njáll Festival.

policecar_psThe police in Akureyri, north Iceland, are certain that the house on Eidsvallagata where a fire was raging early on Sunday morning was set on fire on purpose. The fire started inside an open basement window and it has been determined that it was not an electrical fire.

Kaupthing Loaned ISK 450 Billion Immediately Pre-Crash

kaupthinghead_ipa-sjoIn its last meeting before the banking collapse in October 2008, in London on September 24, the loan committee of the board of Kaupthing Bank agreed to grant loans worth ISK 450 billion (USD 3.9 billion, EUR 2.9 billion). For comparison, the entire tax revenue of the Icelandic state in 2008 was ISK 430 billion.
