Nineteen conservation and animal welfare groups, which are said to represent tens of millions of US citizens, called on the US Secretaries of Commerce and Interior to impose trade sanctions against Iceland for its commercial whaling on December 21.
Isavia, the operator of Icelandic airports, states on its website that the direct flights from Reykjavík Airport to Norway don’t fulfill the European Union’s safety requirements and that Air Iceland sold tickets for these flights even though a permit hadn’t been granted.
The vast majority of people who travel to Iceland, 97 percent, are satisfied with their experience and find that their expectations were met, according to a survey conducted by market research company Rannsóknir og rádgjöf on behalf of the Icelandic Tourist Board last summer.
The sale of holiday packages to warm and sunny locations over Christmas has gone well this year with more people traveling at this time of year than in 2008 and 2009. The most popular locations are the Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland, as in past years.
