Walfleisch in Island nur zum Teil exportiert

Von den 125 Finnwalen, die das Unternehmen Hvalur hf. in 2009 in isländischen Gewässern gefangen hat, ist nur ein Viertel, etwa 372 Tonnen, nach Japan exportiert worden, heisst es beim isländischen Statistikamt. Damit liegen etwa 1100 Tonnen Walfleisch immer noch in isländischen Kühlhäusern.

Icelandic rock band Endless Dark has signed an agreement with English booking agency X-Ray Touring, a major player on the European music market. The record label represents musicians such as Coldplay, Eminem, Green Day, Snow Patrol, Nick Cave and Queens of the Stone Age.

Surtsey Center Opens in Westman Islands

Environment Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir opened the Surtsey Center in the Westman Islands on Friday. The center is dedicated to the volcanic island, created in a series of eruptions 1963-1967, which is a nature reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

District Commissioner: Fischer Shown Respect at Exhumation

A biological sample was retrieved from the earthly remains of late chess master Robert J. Fischer during an exhumation at the Laugardealakirkjugardur cemetery near Selfoss in Iceland, where Fischer was buried in 2008, early yesterday morning. The district commissioner in charge said Fischer’s body was treated with respect.
