Cathedral Closed to Public on National Day?

The Reykjavík Police Department has proposed that the Cathredral of Reykjavík be closed to the public on National Day, June 17, in order to avoid protests and public disturbances in Austurvöllur Square in front of Althingi, Iceland’s parliament. A celebration mass is traditionally held at the Cathedral on this day.

Huge Fire in Selfoss

The cabinetry plant Selós was destroyed in a fire in Selfoss, south Iceland, last night. Nearly 50 firemen battled the fire which started in the plant’s paintwork cabin. The fire department of Selfoss came to the scene five minutes after the fire was reported at 10 pm and managed to put out the fire one and a half hours later.

Tourist Introduced to Icelandic Drinking Traditions

Travelers to Iceland can now learn about the Icelandic drinking culture at Ölgerdin, an Icelandic brewery. Last week the company started visits to its facilities in Reykjavík, in association with Iceland Excursions. According to visir.is Andri Thór Gudmundsson, CEO of Ölgerdin, says that tourists welcome the possibility to get to know this part of Icelandic culture.
