Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America, located in New York, is currently presenting a special sneak peek of the films chosen by the Nordic countries to compete for the Oscar nomination for the category of Best Foreign Language Film 2009. The Icelandic entry, Reykjavík-Rotterdam, will be screened on January 14.

PM: Icesave Referendum to Take Place ASAP

The Prime Minister’s Office released a press release yesterday saying a national referendum on the Icesave legislation should take place as soon as possible. The government has suggested February 20 and 27, and March 6 as the latest possible date.

All oil companies in Iceland have increased their liter price of gasoline by ISK 5. The most common liter price of gasoline in self-service outlets is now ISK 192. Last weekend new laws on higher fuel prices went into effect.

Man Dies in Fire in Reykjavík

A man in his twenties died in a fire in Hverfisgata in central Reykjavík yesterday morning. Four police officers are considered to have performed a Herculean task when they saved another man from the building’s loft where the fire was raging.
