First Answers from Iceland Reach Brussels

The first answers to the European Union’s questionnaire in connection with Iceland’s membership application have been sent to Brussels, according to Foreign Minister of Iceland Össur Skarphédinsson. A negotiation committee has yet to be appointed.

Fires in Reykjavík and Westman Islands

A 13-year-old boy has confessed to setting an abandoned house on Skólavördurstígur in Reykjavík on fire on Sunday and a house on Hverfisgata in mid-September. On Friday the fish liver oil factory Lifrasamlagid in the Westman Islands was destroyed in fire.

Swine Flu Patient Dies in Iceland

An 18-year-old multihandicapped girl, who was infected with the H1N1 swine flu virus, died yesterday morning at Barnaspítali Hringsins children’s hospital in Reykjavík. This is the first fatality due to the swine flu epidemic in Iceland.
