EU-Erweiterungskommissar Olli Rehn kündigte am Mittwoch an, er halte es für sinnvoll, dass Island und Kroatien gleichzeitig der EU beitreten würden, falls die Vorbereitungen für die Mitgliedschaft beider Staaten zum selben Zeitpunkt abgeschlossen seien.

Asylum Seekers Deported from Iceland

Four asylum seekers were deported from Iceland to Greece yesterday. The three men are all Middle-Eastern and three of them have lived in Iceland for over a year. The asylum seekers spent their last 12 hours in Iceland in the care of the police.

Independence Party on Top, Movement Wiped Out

According to a new survey undertaken by daily newspaper Fréttabladid, the Independence Party has reclaimed its spot as Iceland’s most popular political party with backing from 34.8 percent of respondents. The Movement, previously the Civic Movement, would not earn a single seat in parliament.

Swine Flu Vaccination Begins in Iceland

Healthcare workers, the first priority group in Iceland, were vaccinated for the H1N1 swine flu virus yesterday. The next delivery of vaccines will arrive next week and a total of 75,000 people are expected to be vaccinated by the end of November.
