Mother of three loses battle with cancer

Ásta Lovísa Vilhjálmsdóttir died at the National Hospital of Iceland this week at the age of 30. She leaves behind a fiancé and three young children. Vilhjálmsdóttir was chosen “Icelander of the Year” in 2006 by glossy magazine Ísafold.

Iceland’s parliament opens

Althingi, Iceland’s parliament, opened yesterday for the first time after the general elections on May 12. President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson gave the opening speech and Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde then took the chair.

Smoking ban takes effect in Iceland

New regulations regarding smoking take effect today; from now on it is prohibited to smoke in restaurants, bars, clubs and cafés across Iceland. The main reason for the smoking ban is to protect the health of restaurant workers.
