Dagur Eggertsson wins Social Democrat’s primary

With 47% of the vote, Dagur B. Eggertsson won the Social Democrat’s top seat in the primaries for Reykjavík city council reports news station NFS. Dagur was followed by the current mayor, Steinunn Valdís Óskarsdóttir, and the representatives Stefán Jón Hafstein and Björk Vilhelmsdóttir.

Foreign minister endorses new aluminum smelters

Geir H. Haarde, minister of foreign affairs and the leader of the Independence Party, believes, similar to prime minister Halldór Ásgrímsson, that the Icelandic economy can accommodate three new heavy industry projects, a new aluminum smelter in Helguvík, an enlarged aluminum smelter in Straumsvík and a new aluminum smelter in northern Iceland.

Close to 200 Icelanders infected with AIDS

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that up until December 1st, 2004, 183 Icelanders had been infected with AIDS. Of the 183 infected, there were 141 males and 42 females. Most of those infected were between the ages of 25 – 29.

US servicemen questioned by Military Police

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports that the Military Police at Keflavík Airport arrested a few US soldiers, on Saturday, when their military aircraft stopped in transit at Keflavík Airport.
