With 47% of the vote, Dagur B. Eggertsson won the Social Democrat’s top seat in the primaries for Reykjavík city council reports news station NFS. Dagur was followed by the current mayor, Steinunn Valdís Óskarsdóttir, and the representatives Stefán Jón Hafstein and Björk Vilhelmsdóttir.

Mikhail Gorbachev, former leader of the Soviet Union, will celebrate the 20th year anniversary of the Reagan – Gorbachev Summit Meeting in Reykjavík this coming fall.
Geir H. Haarde, minister of foreign affairs and the leader of the Independence Party, believes, similar to prime minister Halldór Ásgrímsson, that the Icelandic economy can accommodate three new heavy industry projects, a new aluminum smelter in Helguvík, an enlarged aluminum smelter in Straumsvík and a new aluminum smelter in northern Iceland.
