Tunnel to Westman Islands practical

After examining existing plans and new research, consultants from the giant Scandinavian engineering company NCC and the Norwegian engineering firm Multiconsult have concluded that a tunnel between mainland Iceland and the Westman Islands is a realistic option in both financial and geological terms for greatly improving transportation between the two areas.

A record number of 92 women and 74 children stayed at the refuge for abused women, Kvennaathvarf, in 2005, compared to 88 women and 55 children the year before.

Waiting lists cut for many operations

Minister of Health Jón Kristjánsson has contracted four hospitals to perform almost 600 waiting list operations during 2006. The hospitals are Landspitali in Reykjavík, St Jósef’s in Hafnarfjörður, FSA University Hospital in Akureyri, and a hospital in Akranes.
