According to Fridrik Gunnarsson, a Reykjavík police officer, 315,000 aerial fireworks have been imported for New Year’s Eve, 130,000 torches and about 100,000 “cakes”.

Just a few decades ago the neighborhood fish store was a stable fixture in Icelandic towns. Now, according to Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, the number of fish stores has drastically dropped.

Never before have as many cars been imported into Iceland; automobile imports increased 50% in 2005 from the year before.
