Iceland won the strong Slovenia team in handball 35:34 in Reykjavík yesterday. In doing so, they have secured a place in the European Handball Championship in Denmark next year.

The Iceland captain, Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson, who plays for Kiel in the German Bundesliga, was the man of the match with 13 goals. The second highest scorer was his team mate Aron Pálmarsson with nine goals. The highest scoring Slovenian was Nenad Bilbija, who plays with TSV GWD Minden in the German Bundensliga, with nine goals.
In the two games against Slovenia, Guðjón Valur scored a stunning 22 goals.
In the other game in Group 6, Belarus beat Romania 31:25. Iceland is at the top of the group with eight points, second is Belarus with five points, Slovenia is third with three points, followed by Romania, which has lost all four games.
In Group 3 Norway lost 28:32 to France, and Sweden lost 18:22 to Poland.
Slovenia finished fourth in the World Cup in Handball in Spain earlier this year while Iceland finished 12th.
