The first official trailer for Oblivion, the latest Tom Cruise movie that was partly shot in Iceland last summer, has been released. Icelandic landscape can be seen in the trailer, part of which is supposed to serve as the New York of the future.
Oblivion is a sci-fi thriller. Tom Cruise’s character, Jack Harper, returns to earth 60 years after it was destroyed in a war with aliens. Everyone was evacuated and “nothing human remains.”
Wearing a New York Yankee cap, Jack speaks of the last super bowl game having been played “right here” and a scorched Empire State building is perched right in the middle of a desolate highland landscape, ruv.is reports.
Well-known sites in Northeast Iceland can be seen in the trailer, such as the crater Hrossaborg and the waterfall Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
According to RÚV, Oblivion is set to premier in Iceland in mid-April 2013, one week before general screenings begin in the U.S.
Tom Cruise’s time in Iceland last summer garnered worldwide attention, not least because of his and Katie Holmes’s divorce, right around the actor’s 50th birthday.
