Could you help me find out the plans for the Keflavík base and any pictures that are available?

Q: I was stationed in Iceland from 1985 to 1988. I loved the country and the people. I've been trying to find out the plans for the Keflavík base, and any pictures that are available. I know that it has to be a lot different from my time. I can only find a few pictures of the base on the web. It would be nice to show my kids.

A: National broadcast RÚV ran a story on the former US Naval Air Station in Keflavík on March 26, 2006, and if you click here you can watch a the news report with a video of what it looks like now (the video will only be accessible for two weeks from that date).

When the base was vacated by the US Military in fall 2006, the properties in the area were handed over to the Icelandic state. A special company, KADECO – the Keflavík Airport Development Corporation, was founded to lead the development and transformation of the former base to civil use and selling the buildings there to parties of interest.

These parties include the company Base, which purchased 20 pieces of property (mainly storehouses), Atlantic Film Studios, buying 12 pieces of property, Keilir – the Atlantic Center of Excellence which is investing in two buildings on the base and Háskólavellir (“University Campuses”), which bought the largest part of real estate in the area, a total of 89 buildings that are used as inexpensive apartments for students. The State Church took over the local chapel, Kapella Ljóssins.

Click here to read more about Keilir’s plans for the area.
