Nine Convicted for Illegal Downloads in Iceland

Reykjavík District Court convicted nine individuals for illegal downloads on Monday through the file-sharing website DC++, which thousands of Icelanders have used. The longest sentence was given to Bjarki Magnússon, a 30-day provisional sentence.

Magnússon was given the longest sentence because he established a portal to DC++ on the website dci.is. The remaining eight individuals were let off with two years on probation. Together the convicts have to cover legal costs totaling ISK 2.6 million (USD 39,000, EUR 26,000), DV reports.

“This is a very clear verdict that confirms that the courts find [such downloading] illegal,” said Snaebjörn Steingrímsson, chairman of SMÁÍS, the Association of Film Right-Holders in Iceland, adding that he is disappointed by how mild the sentences were.

The case began when police searched the homes of the nine convicts in 2004 and confiscated a large amount of computer equipment.

A similar case, SMÁÍS vs. Svavar Lúthersson, a representative of the file-sharing website torrent.is, is currently being heard before the Reykjanes District Court.

Dadi Gudbjörnsson's art with its smiley faces, Aladdin's lamps, gleaming hearts, blue mountains and psychedelic flora of unearthly origin reminds me of the cheesy R.E.M. song “Shiny Happy People”. The sugar-sweet naivety fails to amuse me but I must admit it infects my mood with delirious joy.  more
Former President of Iceland Vigdís Finnbogadóttir turned 80 on 15 April this year and Mayor Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir—in making her an Honorary Citizen of Reykjavík to mark the occasion—observed that Finnbogadóttir’s life was interwoven with that of Reykjavík. In June 1980 Finnbogadóttir made history when she became the world’s first democratically elected female head of state.  more
