Now that the volcanic eruption in Grímsvötn on Vatnajökull is coming to an end, people are speculating what volcano will be the next to erupt in Iceland. Geophysicist Páll Einarsson said there are many indications that Hekla, also in south Iceland, will be next.

“Hekla has been preparing for an eruption since it last erupted in 2000. There are many indications that it is ripe for an eruption and it has been ready to burst for a few years,” Einarsson told Fréttabladid, adding that an eruption in Hekla would likely be small.
“The past eruptions in Hekla have been rather harmless, but the past eruptions in Grímsvötn were also rather harmless so you never know,” he said.
As for the current Grímsvötn eruption, it is about to come to an end. However, there have been powerful explosions from time to time when glowing lava flows into the water-filled crater, as Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson, professor in geophysics at the University of Iceland, described.
“It has become a very small eruption which only impacts the crater and its closest environment,” he added, pointing out that although the activity in the volcano has decreased significantly, the eruption cannot be declared over just yet.
The eruption could seethe for a few days or week before it comes to a definite end, Gudmundsson stated.
