Students and staff of the Mýrdalshreppur elementary school in Vík, south Iceland, tested evacuation procedures for a potential volcanic eruption in Katla yesterday. The volcano is covered by Mýrdalsjökull glacier and could cause severe flooding in the town.

Vík inhabitants are well prepared; on Monday a meeting was held in the town with geophysicist Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson, Morgunbladid reports.
Gudmundsson reviewed the recent seismic activity in Katla, which has been constant since the glacial river Múlakvísl flooded in July, tearing down a bridge on the Ring Road. The volcano is under close observation.

One of the last tasks of Steingrímur J. Sigfússon while in office as minister of industries and innovation was to issue a regulation on Monday extending the reserve for whales in Faxaflói bay, off Reykjavík in Southwest Iceland. The regulation took affect at midnight.
