Guðríður Guðbrandsdóttir, the oldest living Icelander, celebrated her 106th birthday on Wednesday. She lives in a service apartment for senior citizens in Reykjavík. She always goes to the canteen for lunch and does gymnastics twice a week.

When Guðríður celebrated her 105th birthday last year, she recited an 84-verse poem, “Skröggskvæði”, from memory, but she wasn’t planning to repeat the feat this year.
“I don’t want to make a fuss,” Guðríður told Morgunblaðið, adding that she wasn’t planning to spend her birthday at home.
Born and raised at Spágilsstaðir in Laxárdalur in the Dalir region in west Iceland, Guðríður came to know the region’s most famous poets of the early 20th century, Stefán frá Hvítadal, Jóhannes úr Kötlum and Steinn Steinarr.
“I always thought he was a little weird,” she said of Steinn.

On June 17, 1944, the Republic of Iceland was formally established and Iceland became independent after being under Danish rule. The day has been celebrated as the Icelandic National Day ever since.

Yesterday Fréttabladid revealed that the President’s wife, Dorrit Moussaieff, has moved her legal residence to Great Britain. This has happened in spite of the legal requirement of couples to have the same residence. The Office of the President says that no official organs have objected.

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.

Sin Fang will celebrate the release of his third album with a release concert in Iðnó on June 12. Flowers was released in February by Morr Music and has been well received by music enthusiasts and critics alike. The concert will be supported by Vök, this year’s winners of the Icelandic Music Experiments.
