Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson considers the bombing on Hverfisgata near the Government Offices in central Reykjavík on Tuesday and the police’s late response to it to be serious.
Nearly two hours passed from the time a witness reported the bombing to the emergency hotline 112 to the arrival of a police team to the scene, ruv.is reports.
The minister intends to discuss the matter with the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police and the Chief of Reykjavík Metropolitan Police. He also wants the investigation to be expedited.
The bomb exploded outside the offices of the State Prosecutor, State Attorney and the International Monetary Fund and close to the Government Offices.
Jón Bjartmarz, senior officer at the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police said the slow response was caused by a mistake made at a communication control center where staff didn’t realize the seriousness of the matter.
Commissioner at the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police Stefán Eiríksson is calling for an investigation into the mistake. Ögmundur agrees.
“The police are to do two things, investigate the case and also review all work methods,” Ögmundur said. “Once the review has been completed, I will meet with the national commissioner and chief of police in Reykjavík where I will be presented with their report on the case’s progress.”
The police also consider the bombing to be very serious. No one was harmed in the explosion but it could have caused injury to those close by.
“Fortunately, no accident occurred but naturally we don’t want such incidents in our community,” Ögmundur concluded.

The first archeological research in Iceland this year will begin at Hafnir in Reykjanes, southwest Iceland, on Monday. Archeologists will continue their study of a hut which may originate from 770-880 AD and predate the historical settlement of Iceland in 847.

A small glacial burst occurred in the volcano Katla, which lies underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap in south Iceland, on April 28 and lasted a few days. The activity was registered by seismic monitors and increased conduction was measured in the river Múlakvísl until May 7.
