The tour ‘Knitting and Hiking between Fire and Ice’ was recently voted one of the world’s best tours at this year’s CMT 2013 in Stuttgart, Europe’s largest travel fair.
The tour, which received a Sonntag Aktuell international travel award, is organized by the knitting expert Hélène Magnússon and Icelandic Mountain Guides, South Iceland news website Sunnlenska reports.
The tour was featured in an article in Stuttgart newspaper Stuttgarter Nachricten following the win.
The tour is described on mountainguides.is as adventurous. “Combined with the visit of the Þingborg wool centre and the Skógar Folk Museum, the Fimmvörðuháls hike will be an unforgettable knitting experience, with spectacular nature and exciting geological features. We’ll get to knit at the site of a short eruption just before the one in Eyjafjallajökull.”
Participants are given an insight into Icelandic knitting traditions along the way, with Hélène introducing new and old techniques.
According to Icelandic Mountain Guides, in the past, Icelandic men knitted socks while walking and so footwear is the theme of the knitting tour.
