Iceland Towns Cut Off after Bad Weather

The town of Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland has been isolated for three days due to bad weather and heavy snowfall. Residents in the town have not been able to travel over the Fjarðarheiði mountain pass to get to work or school in Egilsstaðir since Saturday evening.

Guests who traveled to the town for Þorrablót gatherings are also stuck, ruv.is reports.

Residents of nearby Neskaupstaður have also been unable to travel and parts of North and West Iceland have been affected by bad weather and excessive snowfall as well.

Search and rescue workers were called out to various parts of the country, including Húsavík, where strong winds dislodged roofing and knocked over trees.

As reported yesterday, roads are widely impassable in the West Fjords as well as in parts of North and East Iceland after heavy snowfall. Electricity was also being rationed in the northern part of the West Fjords after a blizzard damaged electricity poles yesterday.

Visir.is reports that electricity will likely continue to be rationed in parts of the West Fjords again today.

Forecasts are for strong winds, more than 20 m/s, in parts of the country, particularly in the northwest and the northeast coast, intermittent rain in the south and sleet or snow in the northeast.
